South Korean Lee calls for energy-saving campaign, including shorter showers and curbs for cars.

South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung called for a nationwide energy-saving campaign due to risks to oil and gas supplies from the war in Iran, saying public institutions would limit the use of cars.

Energy Minister Kim Sung-whan said at a cabinet meeting that the ban on private-sector vehicles is voluntary for now, but could be reviewed if the energy alert level increases.

The government is urging residents to start 12 energy-saving practices, such as taking shorter showers, charging phones and electric vehicles during the day, and using washing machines and vacuum cleaners during the weekend.

The government will ask 50 major oil-consuming businesses to reduce usage and encourage staggered commute times and other steps to preserve the environment.

Kim also said Seoul will restart five nuclear reactors by May, ease restrictions on coal-fired power plants and expand renewable energy to reduce long-term dependence on LNG, and may extend the lifespan of three coal-fired power plants that are scheduled to close this year.

Adjusting the energy mix is expected to save up to 14,000 tons, or up to 20% of South Korea's average daily LNG consumption of 69,000 tons for energy.

South Korea also plans to draft a $16.6 billion supplementary budget, which could include cash vouchers for consumers and financial support for companies, amid growing talk of stimulus from other economies.

South Korea imports about 70% of its crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz. The country faces a looming energy crisis despite holding about 190 million barrels of oil reserves, 100 million barrels from the government and 90 million from private companies.
