"China's Coal Consumption to Peak in 2025" - Experts Express

China's coal consumption could peak by 2025, experts warn. New research from the climate institute, the Center for Clean Energy and Air Research (CREA) and the International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS) shows growing optimism for the country's green transition.

Of industry experts and academics, 44 percent believed the country's CO2 emissions will peak no later than 2025. There is also hope when it comes to China's coal use with 52 percent expecting it to peak in consumption by 2025. Only 20 percent said the peak would occur later. Coal currently accounts for about 80 percent of China's fossil fuel emissions.

"Achieving carbon neutrality in a fast-growing economy like China is not easy, but the country's substantial efforts are beginning to bear fruit. As the country continues its transition, the expanded deployment of clean energy and the ongoing industrial transformation promise even greater advantages," analysts explain.

In 2022, 69 percent of experts thought China's emissions would reach more than 15 percent above what they were in 2020. By 2024, that figure had dropped to 44 percent.

The growth of solar and wind power generation capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years. Also, more than 50 percent of all vehicle sales were electric for three consecutive months in 2024. Between 2021 and 2025, Beijing set plans to strictly control the use of fossil fuels. From 2026 to 2030, it is intended to begin phasing out coal.

While the country's transition is on track in areas such as transport emissions and the sale of electric vehicles, China still needs to reduce its total greenhouse gas emissions or energy consumption to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement.
