Serbia restores nuclear power - Belgrade repeals the law that prohibited the construction of plants
Serbia has lifted a 35-year moratorium on nuclear power, changing its energy strategy as the country grapples with growing demand and aims to align with European Union standards.
Serbia's move to bring back nuclear power comes at a time of a wider push to decarbonise the sector. The country is committed to reducing dependence on coal, which currently dominates power generation. However, switching to renewables alone is unlikely to meet growing needs. Nuclear power is seen as a complementary solution that provides reliable and low-emission supply.
The decision overturns the Law on the Prohibition of the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants, which has been in force since the 1980s, a legacy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Amendments to the Law on Energy, approved by the Serbian parliament, introduce several measures to modernize the country's energy framework. These include the introduction of licenses for electricity storage, as well as steps to integrate Serbia's electricity markets with regional and EU ones.
The decision to explore nuclear power has been under consideration since April, when Serbia signed a memorandum of understanding with France's EDF, a global leader in nuclear and renewable electricity generation. The agreement signaled the beginning of cooperation on a peaceful nuclear energy program.
The return of nuclear plants will be welcomed by industry experts and international partners, but risks antagonizing environmental groups and residents concerned about nuclear safety and waste management.
