Albanians lead in the ownership of houses in Europe / Germans, for rent. How are

In a detailed publication by the "European Statistics Agency" on housing in Europe, there is a range of data about how Europeans live in terms of the size of the dwelling and family, the type and quality of housing and whether they own or take it. rent the apartment.

Earlier "Scan Intel" with the help of data from the "Statistics Institute" came to the conclusion that most of the houses are owned by families, while regarding the family economic units that live on rent, for free or have in use the apartment occupies a very small weight.

But what does the latest Eurostat data say for 2023?

If Albania was previously ranked second for the highest percentage of homeowners among European countries, it seems that this trend has changed according to the results of the 2023 Census. However, the data says that we are still among the countries with the highest rate of families which have owner status or are becoming owners.

In Albania, out of about 755 thousand families in total, about 623 thousand are the owners of the apartment or in the process of obtaining the legal act. Expressed as a percentage, it results that about 82.5% of the families have the ownership status of the apartment, while 8.8% are renters.

In 2023, around 69% of the EU population owned their own home, while the remaining 31% lived in rented accommodation. The highest ownership rates were observed in Romania, where 96% of the population lived in a household that owned their own home, Slovakia at 94% and Croatia and Hungary both at 91%. Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria, Latvia and Albania follow in the ranking.

In all EU countries except Germany, ownership was more common. In Germany, renting was somewhat higher with 52% of the population being renters.

Living in a rented house or apartment does not only vary depending on the country, but also depending on the degree of urbanization, namely whether you live in a city or a rural area, but not to mention informality.

Another indicator that "Scan Intel" has analyzed is the size of the family.

In the EU, there were an average of 2.3 people per household in 2023, according to the figures. Albania seems to lead Europe with the highest number of members of a family. According to the Census figures, the average composition of an Albanian family in 2023 was estimated at 3.2 members from 3.9 in 2011. Among EU countries, this number varied from 3.1 people in Slovakia, 2.9 in Poland, 2.7 in Croatia and Ireland to 2.0 people in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The countries with the lowest number were Finland and Lithuania with 1.9 people each.
