The Albanian potato does not "cross the border"! - Cause, a bacterium. Denaj: We expect unblocking of exports in 2025
For several years, Albanian producers have not been able to export potato products to international markets. The reason for this is a bacteria that some have in the potato and the land where it is produced, causing the EU to ban the export of this agricultural crop.
"We need to increase exports for potatoes, I had a communication with DigiSante in Brussels because we are blocked from exporting potatoes because of a bacteria and we have done the analysis for two years and this bacteria is no more. And in 2025 we expect that if we come out without waste and can export".
Referring to the data of the Institute of Statistics, in 2022, potato production increased by 1.5%, reaching about 263 thousand tons. While the cultivated area results in nearly 10,068 hectares.
Among the counties that cultivate the most are Korça, Elbasani, Shkodra and Fieri. But despite the fact that we do not export, the import of this product in the country is on average 5 thousand tons per year.
Potato imports are dominated by countries such as Kosovo, the Netherlands, Greece, Egypt, Germany and France.
