China and Taiwan are preparing for the tropical storm - Typhoon Bavi hit southeast Taiwan, winds of 200 km/h

China and Taiwan were bracing for what could be the most destructive tropical storm in years as Typhoon Bavi slammed into southeastern Taiwan on Thursday, packing winds of nearly 200 km/h (124 mph), and parts of China were still reeling from Typhoon Maysak.
Authorities in Taiwan urged residents to stockpile supplies and prepare for what could be the most powerful typhoon to hit the island since Typhoon Kong-rey in 2024, which killed three people.
Bavi, currently about 1,000 km (621 miles) wide at its widest point or roughly the width of France, is forecast to skirt northern Taiwan before reaching China's eastern Fujian province on Saturday evening, according to China's National Meteorological Center.
Storms of this size have been "quite rare in recent years," Jason Chang, a weather forecaster at Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, told Reuters, adding that Bavi is expected to be the largest storm to hit the island since 1987.
Rescuers in China are still searching through the rubble left by Typhoon Maysak, which killed at least 39 people as it swept through the southwestern region of Guangxi earlier this week, local officials said at a news conference on Thursday. Nine people remain missing across the region, they added.
China, the world's second-largest economy, along with neighboring Japan and Taiwan, are increasingly exposed to devastating weather events that scientists link to climate change. This year is particularly concerning because the expected emergence of El Niño could raise temperatures and help fuel more frequent and intense typhoons.
"A decrease in wind intensity is expected starting Thursday, but Bavi will remain a dangerous storm as it impacts Taiwan and eastern China from Friday through Monday," according to Jason Nicholls, an expert at AccuWeather, a commercial forecasting service.
