Fish and vegetables increase food bills in June/ Rising food prices keep

Food was the main factor that kept inflation high in June, contributing the most to the annual increase in consumer prices. According to INSTAT, the group “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” contributed 1.02 percentage points to annual inflation, more than any other group in the consumer basket.

Overall, prices in the “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” group increased by 3% compared to June last year, in a month when overall inflation reached 3.2%. This indicates that price pressure continues to be felt strongly on basic products that account for the majority of households’ daily expenses.

Within the food group, the highest increase was recorded in fish and other seafood, by 9%. Following them are vegetables, tubers and legumes, which became more expensive by 8.5% compared to a year earlier.

There was also a significant increase in meat products. The category "live animals, meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals" increased by 3.7%, while fresh, chilled or frozen meat cost 4.2% more than in June 2025.

Other food products also became more expensive, but at a more moderate pace. Non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.9%, sugar, sweets and confectionery by 2.5%, while milk, dairy products and eggs by 2.4%. Cereals and cereal-based products had a lighter increase, by 0.9%.

On the other hand, fresh and dried fruits were among the few products with price reductions, falling by 2.8% compared to the same month last year. This decrease has partially mitigated the increase in the price of the food basket, but not enough to change the overall trend.

The data shows that food inflation is not concentrated in just one product, but affects several important categories of daily consumption. For households, this means that price increases are felt most strongly in basic purchases such as food, meat, fish and vegetables.
