India "studying" response to US - Plans tariffs on American products

India is considering imposing import duties on some products made in the United States in retaliation for Washington's tariffs on steel and aluminum, a document filed with the World Trade Organization shows.

"The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations takes the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States," the document said. However, it did not specify what types of products might be subject to tariffs.

In March, the United States imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, an extension of measures first imposed in 2018 during US President Donald Trump's first term.

India, the world's second-largest producer of crude steel, said in its submission to the WTO that the duties would affect $7.6 billion in Indian-made products going to the United States.

In addition to tariffs on steel and aluminum, the Trump administration has threatened reciprocal tariffs of 26% on Indian goods. The two countries are trying to reach a trade deal, with New Delhi offering to reduce the tariff gap with the US by two-thirds.

India has some of the world's highest tariffs on imports and Trump has previously called the country a "tariff abuser."

New Delhi has also imposed its own tariffs on steel. Last month, it imposed temporary duties of 12% to curb imports of cheap steel, mainly from China.

In addition to its efforts to limit domestic supply, India also aims to secure greater access for Indian steel exports through talks with partner countries.
