"Ready to supply the US with aluminum and minerals" - Putin aims to

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered the United States the opportunity for joint exploration of the country's rare earth metal deposits, as well as the supply of aluminum to the US domestic market, under a future economic agreement.

White House President Donald Trump said earlier that "major economic development deals with Russia" would take place. Putin then chaired a meeting with his ministers and economic advisers on rare earth metals.

"We obviously have much more resources of this kind than Ukraine," Putin added. He noted that a possible US-Ukraine deal involving rare earths was not a concern for Russia.

The Kremlin has the world's fifth-largest reserves of rare earth metals, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, after China, Brazil, India and Australia. Moscow's reserves are estimated at 3.8 million metric tons.

Rare earth metals are used to create magnets that convert energy into motion for electric vehicles, mobile phones, missile systems and other electronic devices. Russia produces only 2,500 tons of concentrate a year and lacks the capacity to process it. Putin said potential deals to explore the metals could also extend to deposits in Ukrainian territory that the Kremlin controls.

He noted that Russian companies could also supply up to 2 million tons of aluminum to the US market annually if the market reopens. Russia provided up to 15% of US aluminum imports before the bans took effect in 2023.

The Russian president suggested that Moscow and Washington could work together on hydroelectric power plants and aluminum production in Siberia, where the main base for Russia's largest aluminum producer, Rusal, is located.
