Confiscated properties on the coast, list revealed - Among them are luxury

Despite Tirana having the largest number of confiscated assets, luxury properties illegally obtained by criminal groups are also numerous on the coast. According to the Agency for the Administration of Confiscated and Sequestered Property, out of 265 properties confiscated in total in Albania, around 111 were in coastal cities. From the catalogue published by this Agency, 34 properties were confiscated in Durrës, 45 in Vlorë, 24 in Saranda and 8 in Shëngjin.

But what are the types of these assets?

Most of the confiscated properties are apartments on the seafront and business units, but there is also a lack of hotels. Specifically, in Vlora, 2 garages, 3 units, 5 pastures, 20 apartments, 6 properties of land and buildings together, 1 arable land, 5 buildings and 3 hotels have been confiscated.

In Saranda, 2 properties of land type, 19 apartments, 3 hotels accompanied by land were confiscated. While in the city of Durrës, 11 businesses, 1 basement, 5 apartments, 1 hotel, 4 properties of land type, 1 compound unit, 4 properties of land type plus building, 1 ranch plus arable land, 1 arable land, 1 land plot and 4 pastures were confiscated. Meanwhile, almost all the properties confiscated in Shëngjin are land near the coast.

Assets generated by organized crime or corruption, which are confiscated by the state, may be put up for sale, leased or for social reuse. In cases of leasing of seized assets, the chief administrator establishes a commission for the assessment of the market price. If leasing at the market price is impossible, upon the proposal of the administrator of the seized assets, the lease price may be negotiated by the chief administrator. On the other hand, the sale of seized assets is carried out by auction by the Agency and the proceeds are deposited in the Agency's account.

With these assets, or the income derived from them, support for the families of fallen officers can be ensured, financing for the general directorate of the State Police and the Prosecutor's Office, rehabilitation and social empowerment of victims of trafficking, use of confiscated assets in the service of the community, and more. A considerable number of confiscated buildings or premises have been put at the service of the public. Even the Agency for the Administration of Confiscated and Sequestered Property itself now works in confiscated offices.

However, interest in taking these properties into use by citizens or businesses remains low, as they are seen as potentially dangerous, due to their previous ownership by criminal groups.
