Davos begins a new era - Confronting the global order shaken by Trump

Business and political elites head to the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos next week, with its vision of a rules-based global economic order being tested to its limits.
US President Donald Trump's expected appearance at the Swiss mountain resort highlights the gap between his agenda and the consensus-driven approach, which has faced persistent criticism that Davos is a place where the rich talk.
His "America First" policy has led to the use of trade tariffs as punishment, military intervention in Venezuela, the threat of invading Greenland by force, and a US withdrawal from cooperation on climate, health, and other global challenges.
The Trump administration has also threatened Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell with criminal charges, prompting several senior central bankers to issue statements defending him and the central bank's independence.
Calling the 56th edition "A Spirit of Dialogue," leaders of the World Economic Forum in Davos say that, given the current uncertainty, it is essential to come together to chart a path forward in business and politics.
But others say that, with the US and China using power to suit national interests, this forum risks becoming obsolete.
Davos watchers are also considering whether the event has lost momentum since its 87-year-old founder Klaus Schwab stepped down as chairman in April.
The latest forum has much to discuss, from how to handle Trump's version of the Monroe Doctrine that establishes US supremacy in the Western Hemisphere, to the ways in which artificial intelligence is changing the world.
It remains to be seen whether China, which has sent high-ranking officials in recent years, will have a significant presence at Davos.
