Fully electric plane lands at New York airport - American company aims to expand

Beta Technologies became the first American company to land an all-electric passenger plane at New York's busy John F. Kennedy Airport.

The ALIA flight to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport lasted 45 minutes and had a pilot and four people on board, Beta said in a statement.

Transport companies, including airlines, are looking to develop services using battery-electric aircraft to transport passengers short distances in cities, allowing them to avoid traffic. Beta says its ALIA can travel 463 km on a single charge.

In October, the Federal Aviation Administration finalized comprehensive pilot training and certification rules for air taxi flights, calling it "the final missing piece for introducing these aircraft in the near term."

That same month, Beta raised $318 million in equity capital to fund the production, certification and commercialization of electric aircraft, bringing its total valuation to more than $1 billion. The Vermont-based company was founded in 2017.

"This has been a dream of mine for over 20 years," said Kyle Clark, founder and CEO of Beta Technologies. "We developed every single component on that plane because in aerospace there is no compromise on safety. Every computer, every engine, every battery, every distribution system, all the parts were developed here in Vermont, in New York. And we created a whole new form of transportation," he explained.
