Trump "closes" the borders - Bans citizens of 12 countries from entering the US
The Trump administration signed an order suspending travel to the US for citizens from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
Citing national security interests, the order says the identified countries do not have sufficient vetting and screening processes necessary to detect foreign nationals who may pose security or terrorist threats to the US.
The decision also partially restricted entry for citizens of seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Other details include a country's information-sharing policies, terrorist presence and visa overstay rates.
In a video released by the White House, Trump said that on his first day in office, he directed the secretary of state to conduct a security review of "high-risk regions" to recommend travel restrictions.
He also mentioned Sunday's attack on Jewish protesters in Boulder, Colorado. The man accused of the attack, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, is an Egyptian citizen. But Egypt is not mentioned in the new travel ban.
The policy mirrors a similar measure announced in January 2017, a week into Trump's first term, that banned travel from seven Muslim-majority countries. That policy, while widely criticized, was ultimately upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
This ban was later lifted by President Joe Biden in 2021. Democratic lawmakers have expressed opposition to the decision on social media. The new policy will apply to foreigners from the mentioned countries who do not have visas to enter the US starting June 9.
Certain travelers are exempt from the rule, including permanent U.S. residents, athletes traveling to participate in major sporting events, and family members with “clear and convincing evidence of identity and family relationship.” The statement cites DNA as an example of such identifying evidence.
