FOX NEWS anchor chosen as US Secretary of Defense - 44-year-old Pete Hegseth is chosen by Trump for the sensitive job
A well-known American journalist has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to be the US Secretary of Defense.
Pete Hegseth, 44, has been a co-host of Fox & Friends Weekend on the Fox News Channel and has contributed to the network for a decade. He has developed a friendship with President-elect Donald Trump through the latter's regular appearances on the show.
Hegseth has written several books, mostly focused on military matters, one of his publications was for a short period on the bestseller list.
He is a military veteran with considerable service experience, although he has not held senior positions in the military hierarchy or in the field of national security. After graduating from Princeton University in 2003, he was commissioned as an infantry captain in the Army National Guard, serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.
Hegseth previously chaired Concerned Veterans for America, an organization backed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch. In 2012, he ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in Minnesota. According to his Fox News biography, he has a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
During the formation of his first cabinet after his victory in 2016, President Trump considered Hegseth to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. He considered Hegseth again when Secretary David Shulkin faced criticism before his departure in 2018.
Hegseth will take office at a time of intensified global crises. He will have to deal with Russia's war in Ukraine, the ongoing attacks in the Middle East, efforts for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah, etc. as a priority. The position of Secretary of Defense has been a challenging position in Trump's first term, where in 4 years, 5 people held this office.
