Americans are leaving the country in record numbers - An opportunity for a more peaceful life and higher income

The number of people leaving the United States last year exceeded the number of people entering, and this disparity is not just due to tough immigration policies. The Wall Street Journal reports that a record number of American citizens are leaving the country and moving abroad.
The move comes as people seek a place where they feel safer and where their dollar can go further. Some countries, like Albania, are offering tax-free living for a year. Others are simply looking to escape the current political environment, giving this influx of citizens a nickname: "Donald Dash."
In total, the US recorded a negative net migration of 150,000 people last year. The number is expected to increase in 2026, according to calculations by the Brookings Institution, but it is not an exact figure.
The Department of Homeland Security says there were 675,000 deportations and 2.2 million “self-deportations” last year. Most of those were due to tough immigration measures.
There doesn't seem to be a favorite destination for new immigrants. One in every 15 residents in Dublin's trendy Grand Canal Dock neighborhood was born in the U.S., according to real estate agents there. Mexico is also seeing an influx of elderly Americans moving there for low-cost nursing homes.
In the United Kingdom, Americans are applying for British citizenship at the highest rate since records began in 2004. In the first three months of last year, nearly 6,600 people applied.
