"2025 will be the year of hurricanes" - US scientists predict storm

US government scientists expect an above-normal hurricane season in 2025, producing three to five major hurricanes with sustained winds of at least 179 km per hour.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1, is forecast to produce 13 to 19 named tropical storms with winds of at least 39 mph, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. Of those storms, six to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes with winds of 75 mph or more.

"Warmer sea surface temperatures are probably the main contributor," said Ken Graham, director of the National Weather Service. Academic and private weather forecasters have issued similar forecasts for the hurricane season, which continues through Nov. 30.

Between 1991 and 2020, there were an average of 14.4 tropical storms each year in the Atlantic, including an average of 3.2 major hurricanes among 7.2 hurricanes.

Colorado State University meteorologists said in early April that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be above average, with 17 tropical storms, including nine hurricanes, four of which are predicted to be major.

AccuWeather released its forecast for the 2025 hurricane season in late March. The private weather service is predicting 7 to 10 hurricanes, including three to five major hurricanes, as well as 13 to 18 tropical storms.

Last year's hurricane season was one of the costliest on record. There were five major hurricanes, out of a total of 11 hurricanes and 18 storms. These natural disasters caused 427 deaths, while economic damages reached $130 billion.
