Albania, a car for every door/ Map of motorization in our country. Durrës

According to the latest data from the DPSHTRR, by June 2025, a total of about 1 million vehicles and over 810 thousand cars were registered in Albania. This figure, placed against the number of families, highlights a significant fact: on average, every Albanian family owns at least one car, with a ratio of 1.07 cars per family. This indicator confirms the significant increase in motorization in the country, reflecting not only a practical need for mobility, but also a clear change in the consumption standards and lifestyle of Albanians.

If the national figures show an overall average, the data by region reveal significant differences in the spread of cars. Durrës is the most motorized region in the country, with 301 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, a figure that is closely related to the urban character, coastal position and the highest economic level of the area. Lezha ranks next with 287 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, while Gjirokastra also scores high with 263 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. In these regions, the high ratio indicates not only the ability of families to afford the cost of owning a vehicle, but also the need for personal transportation due to structural deficiencies in public transport.

On the other side of the table stand regions such as Korça, with only 165 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, and Elbasan with 173, reflecting a lag in motorization compared to the rest of the country. These figures may be related to economic factors, a stronger tradition of using public transport or even emigration, which has reduced the active part of the local population.

Meanwhile, Tirana, although the capital and economic center, presents a ratio of 241 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, ranking in the national average. This figure, although not the highest, takes on special significance if we consider the population density and heavy traffic of the capital, where the number of registered vehicles often does not truly reflect the flow of cars circulating, as a good part of them come from other regions for work and service reasons.
