How many hours does an Albanian have to work to earn 100 thousand lek? It takes

A salary of 100 thousand lek per month is considered by many Albanians as a psychological limit for a good income, but how long does an average citizen have to work to achieve this amount?

According to INSTAT, the average gross monthly salary in Albania reached 90,119 lek in the first quarter of 2026, while the average net salary, i.e. the amount that the employee actually receives after deducting taxes and contributions, is estimated at 72,210 lek.

Meanwhile, according to INSTAT data, an employee in Albania works an average of 41.3 hours per week, or about 179 hours per month.

Based on this data, an Albanian with an average gross salary earns around 503 lek per hour of work, while in net terms the profit drops to around 403 lek per hour.

This means that to earn 100 thousand lek gross, an average employee needs about 199 hours of work, while to receive 100 thousand lek net in hand, they need about 248 hours of work.

Translated into eight-hour workdays, this means about 25 working days for 100 thousand lek gross and 31 working days to secure the same net amount.

The calculation highlights the difference between gross and net salary, but also the fact that an amount of 100 thousand lek requires almost an entire month of work for an average employee in Albania.

How does this compare to other countries?

An analysis published by Visual Capitalist, based on OECD data, shows that the time needed to earn a certain amount of money varies significantly from one country to another.

According to the analysis, in Luxembourg and Iceland, the average worker needs just 16 hours of work to earn $1,000, while in the United States it takes about 22 hours. At the bottom of the list are Mexico, with 78 hours of work, and Colombia, where it takes 86 hours of work to earn the same amount.

Although the methodology used in this analysis is based on annual wages adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP) and is not fully comparable to the calculation for Albania, it clearly illustrates how much the value of an hour of work varies from one economy to another.
