What will be the effects of the new vineyard map? - Experts: Products are certified, EU standards are met

Albania will have a new viticultural map for the cultivation of wine grapes. The new draft law submitted for public consultation aims to strengthen local wine varieties and adapt to the standards required by the European Union market, through product certification. But what will be the effects of the homogenization of wine production areas?
Enver Shehi, Viticulture Agronomist, Wine Producer:
"This draft law has many advantages. First, it highlights suitable indigenous varieties that belong to a geographical area in which they become more reliable or more valuable. For example, Sheshi Bardhë or Sheshi i zi, are planted in central Albania. But this does not mean that a wider geographical spread should be penalized, when these criteria are met, Sheshi should not be planted in other areas. This is a kind of disadvantage. On the other hand, we cannot help but favor a farmer producer when he produces with quality, so that he does not cooperate with us, regardless of whether he is in the approved area or not, while the draft law requires that you must declare where you get the raw material."
Uka, Oenologist, Wine Producer:
"Zonal division is needed for identification and provenance of origin, because provenance of origin gives more guarantees to the consumer, which means, when there is an open wine in a carton you don't know what is in it and where it came from because there is no law and there is no seal. For example, if we take the case of Italy, they have three seals, DOCG, DOC, and IGT. These seals show reliability and traceability. In Albania it is much easier to do because Albania is very small. There are much fewer wineries."
The objectives expected to be achieved are the official classification of wine grape production areas; Creation of a scientific basis for zoning; Creation of homogeneous areas suitable for the cultivation of autochthonous varieties such as: Kallmet, Sheshi i Zi, Sheshi i Bardhë, Vlosh, Serina and Debina.
This process is considered necessary for the inclusion of Albanian wines in the European Union quality scheme (Protected Geographical Indications-PGI, Protected Designations of Origin-PDO, traditional terms, etc.) which today dominate the European wine market.
