“Education to support the green transition” - Requirements/Actions

"The transition to renewable energy places a significant burden on both the education and business sectors, so intervention in education is necessary to address market needs."

The request was made by Tina Šarić, director of the Education Reform Initiative for Southeast Europe (ERI SEE), during the regional meeting on the topic "Energy Transition, Human Capital Development: Action Plan in Support of Education and Training for the Renewable Energy Sector", recently held in Skopje.

The meeting brought together experts from the Vocational Education and Training and energy sectors, representatives from ministries of education and VET, qualification agencies and chambers of commerce, as well as the business sector from six Western Balkan economies, including Albania.

Its main purpose was to discuss and approve the Regional Action Plan in support of education and training for the renewable energy sector with recommended activities for the education sector in support of the energy transition.

"To respond to this situation effectively, educational actions must be on the one hand rapid in meeting current needs, but at the same time future-oriented, planning 10, 15 or even 20 years ahead, in order to meet the evolving needs of society. At the center of this effort are teachers, who must be equipped not only with up-to-date knowledge in the field of renewable energy, but also with an understanding of the broader challenges of social and environmental sustainability," said Šarić.

During the event, the draft Regional Action Plan was also presented, which is built on an analysis of the commitments of the Western Balkan economies in the field of renewable energy, their current situation, as well as the results of a survey conducted with teachers from across the region on their needs for professional development in the field of sustainability and clean energy.

According to Šarić, the main goal of the regional Action Plan is to describe some of the needs of the education sector in relation to the energy transition and identify steps to be taken in the future.

The regional meeting was organized by ERI SEE in cooperation with GIZ, within the project “Renewable Energy Services in Education and Training” as part of a larger regional project led by GIZ: Green Agenda: Decarbonizing the Electricity Sector in the Western Balkans region.

Its main purpose was precisely to discuss and approve the Regional Action Plan in support of education and training for the renewable energy sector with recommended activities of the education sector in support of the energy transition.
