Greece, 8 billion euros of investments from the EU - Projects include energy, housing, infrastructure
Greece has launched several ambitious programs with 8 billion euros in funding from the European Union. The projects aim to address the country's energy, housing and infrastructure challenges.
The Greek government has announced the launch of several ambitious programs, funded by the European Union, worth 8 billion euros. These projects aim to address a range of challenges, from energy costs and housing shortages to environmental protection and transportation improvements.
Financing will be provided by the Social Climate Fund, the Modernisation Fund and the newly created Islands Resilience Fund. The plan includes the electricity interconnection of the Dodecanese, the North Aegean and the Cyclades, which is expected to reduce public service costs for consumers.
Additional measures include subsidizing energy improvements for residential and commercial buildings, as well as encouraging the private sector to invest in energy efficiency.
Support for low-income and vulnerable families is a central pillar of the initiative, with heating subsidies, rental subsidies and the construction of social housing. Renovations of student dormitories are also planned to alleviate the accommodation shortage on university campuses.
Transport infrastructure will benefit through the purchase of new electric buses for Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as a major reconstruction of the Athens metro. In parallel, projects addressing water shortages, including the construction of dams, will be prioritized.
The plan also includes support for small businesses to modernize their energy systems, energy-saving investments in industry, and subsidies for public administration employees in areas with a housing shortage. Furthermore, the government aims to support the improvement of the energy connectivity of ships through partnerships with Greek shipyards.
