Germany, over 26 billion euros for army modernization - Investments include

Germany plans to allocate nearly 19 billion euros to equip soldiers with new uniforms and personal equipment over the coming years, as well as another 7.5 billion euros for wheeled armored vehicles, according to a Finance Ministry document.

The government justifies the troop buildup with the ambitious goal of reaching a force of 460,000 soldiers by the mid-2030s, up from the roughly 280,000 that currently make up the Bundeswehr (German army). Spending on the program will be spread out until 2034.

According to the ministry's budget documents, Berlin will also authorize 7.5 billion euros until 2037 for the purchase of wheeled armored vehicles. The initiative is expected to include the purchase of 3,000 to 5,000 "Boxer" vehicles, produced in cooperation between domestic firm Rheinmetall and Franco-German defense company KNDS, according to parliamentary sources.

Germany has significantly increased military spending recently, as Chancellor Friedrich Merz secured support to exempt such spending from public debt limits and strengthen the poorly equipped military. Merz also aims to take more responsibility for European security.

In 2026, total defense spending, including special funds, is expected to reach about 117.2 billion euros, bringing NATO's quota to about 2.8% of GDP.
