Trump threatens to stop opening of US-Canada bridge: "Canada must treat US with the respect it deserves"

US President Donald Trump threatened to stop the opening of a new $4.7 billion bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, in his latest attack on Canada over trade issues.
Trump brought up Canada's ownership of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Canada's refusal to put some American alcoholic beverages on Canadian store shelves, Canada's tariffs on dairy products and trade talks with China.
The bridge was funded by Canada because the U.S. refused to pay for it and is expected to open in the coming months. The cost will be funded by taxpayers for 30 years. "I will not allow this bridge to open until the U.S. is fully compensated for everything we have given them and also, most importantly, Canada must treat the United States with the Fairness and Respect we deserve," Trump said on social media. "We will begin negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With everything we have given them, we should own, probably, at least half of this asset."
In 2012, then-Michigan Governor Rick Snyder accepted an offer from the Canadian government to fund most of the costs of the new Gordie Howe Bridge, taking the unusual step of using executive authority to bypass the legislature. Construction began in 2018 and the bridge is nearing completion.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a rule on January 30 declaring the bridge an official port of entry and says the bridge will save travelers $12.7 million a year by reducing congestion and travel time while easing traffic flow.
In 2023, Detroit was the second-largest cargo port in the U.S. by value and was the largest on the U.S.-Canada border, processing $126 billion worth of commercial truck traffic.
The bridge will help ease truck traffic, saving $2.3 billion over 30 years, according to a University of Windsor study.
