Volkswagen negotiations bring new demands - The needs of electric car

Major Chinese carmakers will be "knocking on Brussels' door" after Volkswagen secured a tariff break from the EU for its China-made Cupra Tavascan electric car, industry analysts say.

The European Commission approved the German car giant's request to exempt the Tavascan model from import tariffs in exchange for an agreed minimum selling price, after intensive discussions which makes possible the first exemption since the EU applied tariffs against China-based electric vehicle manufacturers in 2024.

Chinese automakers are now considering applying for similar deals on electric models they want to ship to Europe, according to the China Chamber of Commerce in the EU. Under European rules, they can negotiate exemptions from tariffs on electric models imported from China.

The European continent is seen as an increasingly important market for Chinese car manufacturers, who want to export more due to oversupply in the country.

According to a market analyst, the move by Chinese manufacturers to the minimum price scheme shows how capable they have been in withstanding tariffs so far, thus attracting the European market.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are also effectively excluded from two of the world's largest markets, the US and India.

Meanwhile, the EU's cautious policies show interest in protecting the industry from cheap imports and strengthening domestic production.
