What drives employees to resign? - The main reasons according to Randstad

Randstad's global Employer Brand Survey shows that an unsatisfactory compensation package remains the most important reason for employees to leave their position. Financial rewards continue to be the determining factor in the decision to change jobs.

This is followed by a toxic work environment and a feeling of lack of fair compensation, elements that reinforce the need for equal treatment and a positive workplace climate. The employee experience turns out to be essential for the preservation of human resources.

Women appear to be more likely to cite unequal compensation (47% vs. 40%) and low salaries (67% vs. 60%) as reasons for leaving, while men focus more on limited career opportunities (38% vs. 33%). Generational differences are also significant. Older generations place more importance on the work climate (52% vs. 45%), while Generation X is more affected by inequality in the reward system (47% vs. about 42%).

At the same time, Millennials and Generation X are seeking a better work-life balance (37%), at higher rates than Generation Z (31%) and Boomers (19%).

Unsatisfactory compensation package remains the main reason for leaving and receives the lowest rating for employer benefits. This finding confirms the crucial role of competitive salaries in retaining talent. A similar discrepancy is observed in the area of professional development, which is considered important but not sufficiently supported by businesses.

Despite the efforts of many companies, the work environment and equal opportunities continue to be factors in turnover. Even small discrepancies can increase the likelihood of changing jobs, especially among women and senior managers.

Generations differ in their criteria for choosing a job. Gen X cites low pay (69%), poor work environment (52%), and unequal pay (47%) as the top reasons for leaving. Gen Z prioritizes career opportunities (38%), while millennials focus more on work-life balance (39%). Women give more importance to most reasons for leaving, while men emphasize professional development.
