What are the most relaxing destinations in the world? - Australia holds the first place, Iceland leads the European ranking
As some of Europe's once peaceful destinations, including France, Spain, Italy and Turkey, struggle with overcrowded tourism, visitors are seeking peace and quiet away from the crowds. The latest research reveals the top places to find this peace.
Australia took the top spot in the special ranking, while many Northern European countries overtook the warmer Mediterranean destinations, thanks to their historic culture of well-being and safer, quieter spaces. Over 76 destinations were analyzed and then ranked by the Global Relaxation Index, based on five factors: safety, solitude, tranquility, nature and well-being.
Iceland scored near-perfect scores for safety and tranquility, ranking third on the list and first among European countries. Finland was not far behind, taking fourth place. It shares a population density of under 20 people per km2 with Iceland.
These figures are in stark contrast to the huge crowds in Italy, which had 198.3 people per km2, and the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius, which was ranked as the most populous destination with an incredible 626 people per km2.
Europe's other top relaxation destinations were Austria, ranked sixth, followed by Sweden, Estonia, Norway and Portugal rounding out the top ten. These countries were praised for their green cities, slower-paced lifestyles and wellness traditions.
Experts compared Australia, the top relaxing destination, with Italy, which came in 30th, pointing out that Australia has 25 times the area but 50 million fewer annual visitors than the European country.
Canada, the only North American destination in the top 25, came in second thanks to high well-being, 34.8 percent forest cover and incredible natural wonders like the Northern Lights.
