Food self-sufficiency, where does Albania rank? The country covers 4 out of 7 categories. It ranks second in the region

Food security and domestic production remain key elements for guaranteeing the basic needs of the population. According to a study published by the scientific journal Nature Food, the results show a surprising global reality: only one country in the world is able to meet all its food needs without relying on imports.
The study analyzes major food categories, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, fish and legumes, providing a clear picture of the level of food self-sufficiency in different countries. Even the largest economies, such as the United States and China, are dependent on imports for at least one of these categories.
Where does Albania stand in this ranking? The data show that our country is classified at an average level, managing to provide only 4 out of 7 food categories through domestic production. In the region, Serbia is presented as the country with the highest level of food self-sufficiency, while Bosnia & Herzegovina and Albania share second place. At the bottom of the regional list are North Macedonia and Montenegro, with the lowest performance in this regard.
Globally, Guyana is the only country that produces enough of all seven major food groups to meet domestic demand. The country even exceeds needs in some categories, such as starchy foods and fruits, making it a unique case in the world.
Close behind are Vietnam and China, which cover 6 of the 7 categories, but face difficulties in milk production. Even the most developed countries are not completely food independent. For example, Canada and the United States provide only 4 categories, remaining dependent on imports for fruits and vegetables.
Another global challenge remains fish production. According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization, about 91% of aquaculture is produced in Asia, making many countries dependent on imports for seafood products, even when they have capacity for other food production.
This reality is closely linked to factors such as climate and geography. Northern countries, due to shorter production seasons, have more difficulty in providing fresh produce throughout the year. As a result, even the most advanced agricultural systems fail to fully guarantee a balanced diet from local produce alone.
