How much did energy cost for an Albanian in 2025? Albania recorded the lowest costs in the Balkans

According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), processed by Visual Capitalist, Albania ranks among the countries with the lowest energy costs and holds last place in the Balkans for the level of these expenses.
The report shows that a person in Albania spent an average of $247 on household energy in 2025, the lowest level in the region. The figures include expenses for electricity, gas, heating and other fuels used in homes, but do not include energy costs for transportation.
Compared to other Western Balkan countries, Serbia records the highest level of household energy expenditure, at $587 per person per year. It is followed by North Macedonia at $451, Montenegro at $424 and Kosovo at $294. At the bottom of this regional ranking is Albania, with only $247 in expenditure per capita.
The data shows that European countries dominate the top of the global rankings, while most countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America are characterized by significantly lower household energy expenditures.
According to the analysis, the high level of spending is not only related to energy prices, but also to other economic and climatic factors. Countries with colder climates have greater heating needs, while higher incomes are usually associated with larger homes and higher energy consumption, including the use of air conditioning systems. In addition, many European countries face relatively high electricity and gas prices for consumers.
Globally, Sweden ranks first with $1,926 in annual energy expenditure per person. It is followed by Finland with $1,786 and Austria with $1,709, reflecting the combination of a cold climate, high standard of living and high energy consumption. At the other end of the ranking are several African countries, where expenditure is much lower. Senegal records $89 per person per year, Tunisia $72, Egypt $35, while Algeria closes the ranking with only $29 in annual energy expenditure.
