From visiting relatives to vacations! How has the purpose of Albanians' trips within and outside the country changed?
From the pre-pandemic period until 2024, the way Albanians travel, both domestically and internationally, has undergone significant changes. Vacations and leisure have taken a significant priority over trips to visit relatives or for business purposes, especially after 2020.
In 2017, only 24.2% of domestic trips and 30.9% of international trips were for vacation. By 2024, these figures have increased significantly, with 54.1% of domestic trips and 47.2% of international trips being for vacation.
The increase is more noticeable from 2019 onwards, perhaps reflecting an increase in living standards, but also the need for relaxation after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, visits to relatives and friends have marked a significant decline, although they continue to have a significant weight. In 2017, these trips accounted for 58.2% of trips within the country and 46.6% abroad. In 2024, this percentage has dropped to 41.1% for those within and 46.1% for those abroad.
This decline indicates a shift in focus from family to leisure travel. However, family visits abroad remain stable, which may reflect the fact that many Albanians have immigrant relatives.
Business travel has seen a drastic decline. From 9.6% in 2017 domestically and 13.8% abroad, in 2024 these trips will account for only 1.7% domestically and 3.0% abroad.
This transformation in travel purposes shows more than just statistical changes, it reflects changes in the lifestyle, economic opportunities, and cultural preferences of Albanians.
