Do immigrants insure their properties in Albania? - Hajdarmataj: In the countries they come from, per capita payments reach 2,000 euros per year
As many Albanians work and live abroad, so too do the number of properties they still own in Albania. Immigrants have left behind entire homes that have often been stolen or destroyed by fire and earthquakes. Even more problematic are cases where their elderly parents live alone in these homes.
According to the Secretary General of the Albanian Insurers Association, Mimoza Hajdarmataj, the countries from which immigrants come have a very high insurance culture, where annual payments reach up to 2,000 euros per capita. They can bring this culture to Albania as well.
"In fact, this period is the time to really call on emigrants who come for vacation to take advantage of this opportunity to return once a year to also insure their property. The countries they come from absolutely have a very high level of insurance culture, I am referring to the European average of 2,000 euros per capita, i.e. insurance payments per year. Considering that they have properties they have purchased in Albania or have their parents who live alone in apartments and are at risk not only from their own events, but from the responsibility of an event that may come from their neighbor ," said Hajdarmataj.
Albania is a country highly vulnerable to natural disasters. In these conditions, property insurance, whether for emigrants or Albanians within the country, remains essential.
"By bringing such a culture of awareness to Albania, they serve the property they have, but also return home with peace of mind, that in case a natural disaster occurs in Albania, in the city where they live, their property will be safe. All of Albania is part of the earthquake risk. Also, we see increased fires in the south, Central Albania or the north. Even thefts are among the events that they can insure their properties. So why not, by coming for vacation, bring the culture of insurance to Albania and return home with peace of mind that their property, built with so much effort, will be protected by an insurance contract with an insurance company in Albania", emphasized the Secretary General of the Association of Insurers.
The latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority shows that in the first five months of this year, gross written premiums for fire and natural forces insurance decreased by 8%, while insurance contracts increased by 9% compared to January - May 2024.
