In which year were the most olives and oil produced? Finally, the figures speak of production 3 times higher than 20 years ago
The olive sector in our country, as part of the Mediterranean, has an ancient tradition of great socio-economic importance, strongly linked to employment and rural development in general. According to the data of the "Ministry of Agriculture", the olive cultivation area in Albania lies in the western coastal region, which represents 36.2% of the country's territory and where about 60% of the population lives. About a third of farmers in the country are dedicated to olive cultivation.
"Scan Intel", based on official data, has made an extended analysis of olive production in our country. From 1991 to 1994, olive production in Albania fluctuated, but after 1995, the number of olive plants, area and production increased steadily.
The figures on olive production from INSTAT start with 2006 and end with 2023. The data indicates that olive production has been increasing year by year, but the year 2022 seems to hold the record. During this year, around 157.7 thousand tons of olives were produced with a cultivation area estimated at 54.6 thousand hectares.
In 2023, the total area was estimated at 54.9 thousand hectares, while the area under production was estimated at 50.4 thousand hectares.
We must keep in mind that the main groups of fruit trees cultivated in our country are fruit trees, olives, citrus fruits and grapes. In 2022, the total area of fruit trees is 88.2 thousand hectares. The largest part of the area of fruit trees for the year 2022 is occupied by olives with 62.0%, or about 9% of the total agricultural land.
After 2022, 2020 ranks as the year with the highest production with 132 thousand tons of production. From 2006 when about 40 thousand tons of olives were produced and until 2023 when about 117 thousand tons of olives were produced, production has increased by approximately 77 thousand tons.
If we refer to the yield over the years, the figures show that it varies from 12 kg per root to 22 kg per root. The data from INSTAT, analyzed by "Scan Intel" show that the year 2012 had the highest yield with 22.4 kg per root, followed by the year 2022 with 17.2 kg per root.
But how much olive oil was produced in the last five years?
In 2019 and 2020, the production of olive oil was estimated at about 20 thousand tons, while in 2022 and 2023 this figure reached about 29.2 thousand tons and 28.3 thousand tons, respectively. Regarding this indicator, we see that the year 2022 holds a record due to the highest production of olives. So this represents a significant increase compared to previous years and is roughly three times higher than the output 20 years ago. However, the data says that in 2023, about 40 thousand tons were produced less than the year before.
