May marks record for tourism/Visitors to the country increased by 31.8%, led by Kosovo Albanians
During the month of May 2025, tourism in Albania has recorded significant growth, reflecting the continued flourishing of this sector in the country. Increasingly, Albania is consolidating itself as a preferred tourist destination, for both domestic and foreign visitors.
According to data published by the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), during the month of May, which coincides with the start of the tourist season, the total number of visitors staying in accommodation structures in Albania increased by 31.8% compared to the same period a year earlier. According to the data, resident visitors recorded an increase of 36.6%, while non-resident visitors (foreigners) increased by 19.6%, further reinforcing the idea that international tourism is becoming an increasingly important pillar for the local economy.
As for the number of overnight stays, they increased by a total of 31.5%. Coastal areas recorded the largest increase in foreign visitors, with 47.6% more compared to May last year, while hotels and other similar structures had a 38.5% increase in visitors.
The data shows that the Central region continues to be the most visited by foreign citizens, with around 125 thousand of them during the month of May. The Southern region also recorded a significant number, welcoming around 71 thousand non-resident visitors. Meanwhile, the Northern region remains with the lowest number of foreign visitors, but has nevertheless experienced a doubling of them compared to the same period last year, testifying to a gradual expansion of tourism throughout the territory.
Regarding the origin of non-resident visitors, Kosovo tops the list with 15%, followed by Italy with 13% and Germany with 9%. Poland and France contributed 8% each, respectively, while 47% of visitors come from other countries.
The improvement in the performance of accommodation structures is also reflected in the occupancy rate of hotel rooms, which reached 28.7% in May 2025, compared to 25.1% in May of last year. This significant increase is evidence of a season that has started strongly and of positive expectations for the coming months.
