Where does Albania get its "bread"? About 60% of its weight is based on just two countries
Albania's dependence on grain imports appears to have been reduced in recent years, as there has been a decrease in the quantity imported and an increase in the quantity produced, especially for 2022 and 2023, compared to previous periods. However, the numbers for 2024 show that there has been an increase in grain imports in weight, but also in value.
In the year we left behind, Albania imported about 10 billion lek of cereals with a slight increase of 0.2%, compared to 2023. Since 2005 when INSTAT data began, we see that in recent years the import of cereals in value has decreased after 2021, while the year with the highest value is 2011, with 14.32 billion lek.
But, which countries did Albania import grains from and how have the main partners changed?
Serbia is in first place with 32% of the weight, followed by Russia, Ukraine and Italy. China, North Macedonia, the United States, Pakistan, Spain and Canada complete the top 10 partners. It is worth noting that Serbia and Russia account for about 60% of the weight.
What is noticeable from the data is that in 2024 the United States has displaced Bulgaria from the "TOP 10" main partners.
In 2020 and 2021, the leading partner in terms of grain imports was Russia, while in 2022, 2023 and 2024, Serbia moved it to second place.
On the other hand, Albania during 2023, the last period for which data is public, produced about 710 thousand tons of cereals, including: wheat, corn, barley, spelt and rye. Exactly ¼ of the production is held on the "shoulders" of a single region, and that is the Fier region. This region produced about 176 thousand tons of cereals during 2023, or 25% of the total for the entire country. In second place, meanwhile, follows the Elbasan region, with 13% of the total, or about 96 thousand tons of production. Korça, meanwhile, holds third place, with about 12% of the total. So, these 3 regions of the country seem to account for more than half of the domestic production of cereals.
