More and more businesses are moving to foreign markets/ Micro enterprises dominate, large companies hold the main weight
The number of Albanian enterprises exporting and importing goods has increased during 2025, reflecting an expansion of business activity in foreign trade. According to INSTAT data, micro and small enterprises continue to constitute the vast majority of companies operating in international trade, while large enterprises remain few in number.
The data shows that during the period 2021–2025, the number of exporting enterprises reached 3,809, an increase of 0.7% compared to 2024 and 19.6% compared to 2021. The largest share of exporters is occupied by micro enterprises with 50.6% of the total, followed by small enterprises with 33.4%, medium-sized enterprises with 13.5% and large enterprises with only 2.5%.
The number of importing companies has also continued to grow. In 2025, 15,225 importing companies were registered, or 3.3% more than the previous year and 25.7% more compared to 2021. As in exports, imports are dominated by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, which represent 98.9% of the total number of importing companies.
Of these, micro enterprises account for the largest share with 70.2%, small enterprises account for 22.4%, medium-sized enterprises 6.3%, while large enterprises only 1.1%.
However, when it comes to the value of trade, the weight changes significantly. In imports, medium and large enterprises account for the majority of the value of imported goods, while micro enterprises, although more numerous, contribute a smaller share of the trade volume.
In exports, enterprises with 50–249 employees hold the main share with about 41% of the total value of exports, while large enterprises with over 250 employees contribute with about 27%. On the other hand, micro enterprises realize only 11% of exports, which shows that larger companies continue to have the greatest impact on the value of foreign trade.
The data confirms that the Albanian business base in foreign trade is expanding, with more and more enterprises entering into exporting and importing activities.
