Which countries consumed Albanian "bread"? In 2024 we exported mainly to Greece, Kosovo and the USA
"Scan Intel" has previously analyzed exports of basic products "Made in Albania" through INSTAT data, but this time it focused on the export of cereals in the last two years.
According to data for 2024, the value of grain exports is estimated at 24.8 million lekë, marking a 4% decrease compared to 2023 when it was recorded at 25.8 million lekë. However, based on official figures, the value of exports for 2023 and 2024 is significantly lower than in 2022, when about 230 million lekë of grain exports were recorded.
Throughout this year, which also coincides with the crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, almost the entire amount of exported grains has gone to a single country, Kosovo, as there have been difficulties with reserves.
But to which countries did Albanian grains go during 2024?
The highest value of exports for this product for the past year was recorded by Greece with 8.5 million lek. Meanwhile, in 2023, data shows that we did not export cereals to this country.
Kosovo ranks second, followed by the United States of America and the United Kingdom with 5.2 million lek and 3.8 million lek respectively. Montenegro, Italy and Rwanda are also included in the ranking. These are the countries to which grain exports have gone.
Let us emphasize that Albania has a significant dependence on this product from imports. According to data previously analyzed by “Scan Intel”, Albania's dependence on grain imports seems to have been reduced in recent years, however, the numbers for 2024 show that there has been an increase in grain imports in weight, but also in value. In the year we left behind, Albania imported about 10 billion lek of grains with a slight increase of 0.2%, compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, if we talk about production, during 2023, the last period for which data is public, it produced about 710 thousand tons of cereals. Exactly ¼ of the production is carried on the shoulders of a single region, and that is the region of Fier.
