Energy thefts drop by 6% - The level of losses in the electricity network improves, decreasing by 1.2%
Electricity losses in the network decreased during 2024 compared to the previous year. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, losses reached 1,614 GWh in 2024 from 1,655 GWh in 2023, marking a decrease of 2.4%.
According to INSTAT, the share of network losses in total available electricity during 2024 is 19.8% from 21.0% in 2023, marking a decrease of 1.2%.
During 2024, transmission losses decreased by 8.6% and distribution losses decreased by 1.5%, compared to 2023. As for losses in the distribution network, non-technical losses, or in other words thefts, had an impact on their decline. According to INSTAT, these losses decreased by 6% during 2024, compared to the previous year.
However, for the year 2024, around 416 thousand MWh of energy results in non-technical losses. Meanwhile, technical losses resulting from the depreciated network were recorded at almost the same levels.
In fact, during the past year, the Distribution System Operator undertook numerous controls for electricity abuses at various entities in the country.
The inspections were carried out in the framework of law enforcement and the fight against informality, while based on risk analyses, the focus was on entities that presented the possibility of electricity abuse. After the inspections, entities where theft was found were processed by the police for violations of the energy law. Most of these entities operated in coastal areas.
