Non-revenue water drops to 61% - WRA: The indicator improved by 3.7%, but it still remains a challenge
The level of non-revenue water decreased to 61%, from 64.7% a year earlier, reflecting a trend of improvement of 3.7% during 2024. However, according to the Water Regulatory Authority, despite the improvement, this indicator remains one of the most problematic for water supply and sewage companies in the country, affecting both the quality of service for customers and their financial sustainability.
According to official data, out of 17 companies that provide water supply services, only 1 company has managed to perform below the 30% limit, which is considered a good indicator, while 5 companies were ranked within the 30-50% limit. The other 11 companies continue to remain above the 50% limit, demonstrating poor performance.
At the same time, according to the WRA, the metering of produced water continues to be a weak point for regional utilities, as many of them have not yet installed meters at key points in the network. This inaccuracy leads to incomplete reporting and makes it difficult to identify actual losses.
The report highlights that only 40% of the water produced is billed, while the rest is lost due to technical and administrative reasons.
WRA suggests that the main focus for the coming years should be to equip all usable sources with water meters, increase transparency in reporting, and strengthen controls against illegal connections.
