Trump boosts US drug production - Decision eases process for locals, increases

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to boost the production of prescription drugs in the US, paving the way for pharmaceutical companies to build new manufacturing sites in the United States.

The order directs the Food and Drug Administration to reduce the time it takes to approve manufacturing plants in the U.S. by eliminating unnecessary requirements and working with domestic manufacturers to "provide early support before facilities are put into operation."

It also directs the agency to increase inspection fees for foreign manufacturing plants, ensure that overseas manufacturers report the source of active ingredients, and consider publicly listing facilities that do not comply with the rules.

The White House currently estimates that it could take 5 to 10 years to build new manufacturing capacity for pharmaceutical products, which is "unacceptable from a national security perspective."

“We don’t want to buy our pharmaceuticals from other countries because if we’re at war or have a problem, we want to be able to produce them ourselves,” Trump said. “As we invest for the future, we will bring our medical supply chains back home forever. We will produce our medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and treatments right here in the United States.”

The order will allow the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct more inspections of new manufacturing sites with the same resources. The agency will also increase inspections of foreign pharmaceutical facilities, moving from announced visits to “surprise” visits abroad.

"We had this crazy system in the United States, where American pharmaceutical manufacturers are subject to inspections. Foreign countries face scheduled visits, while we have surprise visits," said a sector representative.

Trump's order also directs the Environmental Protection Agency to "accelerate construction of facilities" related to the production of drugs and their ingredients.

The United States imported $203 billion in pharmaceutical products in 2023 alone, with 73% coming from Europe, mainly from Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland.
