Albania, "targeted" by hackers - AKSK: 43 incidents in the first half

Albania is increasingly being targeted by hackers for data theft and disruption of public services. This year, our institutions have fallen prey to a greater number of cyberattacks than in 2024.

Our country has faced 29 cyber attacks in the second quarter, 15 more incidents than in January-March. Based on statistics from the National Cyber Security Authority, the first half of 2025 counted 43 cyber incidents, about 34% more incidents than in all of 2024.

The most frequent attacks have been of the DDoS type, aimed at disrupting public services, while the incident with the most serious consequences was the WIPER attack against the Municipality of Tirana, which aimed to permanently delete data and damage digital functions.

In addition, 4 phishing attempts, spear phishing, 3 unauthorized network scans, 2 application compromises, 3 trojans, and 1 exploitation of vulnerabilities in various systems were also identified.

The National Cyber Security Authority (AKSK) states that this quarter clearly confirms the need for continuous vigilance and strengthening of response capacities, while continuing to guarantee uninterrupted monitoring, real-time intervention and technical support for critical and important information infrastructures in the country.

In the first 3 months of this year, the Authority identified and managed a total of 14 cyber incidents, taking concrete measures to neutralize threats and protect critical infrastructures. Meanwhile, in the past year, the number of cyber incidents has been only 32.
