Migrant agreement/ EU Court rejects Italian government's claims!
The European Court of Justice ruled on Friday that European Union countries can speed up rejections of asylum claims for people from countries considered "safe", but only if this designation meets strict legal standards, and allows applicants and courts to access and challenge supporting evidence.
"The sources of information on which such a determination is based must be sufficiently accessible, both to the applicant and to the court having jurisdiction," the EU's highest court wrote in a press release.
As part of an effort by the right-wing government in Rome to speed up the verification of asylum claims and allow fewer people to enter the country, Italy has released a list labeling a number of countries as safe enough for migrants not to qualify for international protection.
The Italian government aims to bring migrants arriving from countries designated as safe and detained in the Mediterranean Sea to a reception center in Albania, where their asylum requests are examined under an accelerated procedure.
