Albania closes the first three chapters of negotiations - Today, the 9th

Negotiations with the European Union have entered a new phase for Albania. The ninth Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference will be held in Brussels, where the first three chapters of the negotiations will be closed.

This concerns Chapter 25, which relates to science and research, Chapter 26, on education and culture, and Chapter 30, which includes foreign relations.

Chapter 25 assesses the country's capacity to participate in European research and innovation programs. It requires functional institutions, qualified staff, and conditions for universities, researchers, and businesses to benefit from European Union programs.

Chapter 26 covers education, vocational training, youth, sport and culture. The focus is on improving the quality of education, mobility of students and young people, non-discrimination, and the preservation and promotion of cultural diversity.

While Chapter 30 is directly related to the country's trade policy towards third countries. Albania is required to align its trade agreements and positions with those of the European Union, as well as to create the capacities to participate in European development and humanitarian aid policies.

Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, praised the progress made by our country.

“Today is a ‘Super Tuesday’ for European Union enlargement. For the first time in more than two decades, we are holding four accession conferences on the same day. The four countries leading the process – Ukraine, Moldova, Albania and Montenegro – are all taking major steps forward on their path to EU membership. With Ukraine and Moldova, we are opening Cluster 6, which covers areas such as defence and security, where the case for their membership in the European Union is particularly strong. Albania will close its first negotiation chapters. Montenegro is already in the final phase of formal negotiations, having closed 18 out of 33 chapters. Now, this positive momentum must be translated into concrete results on the ground.”

The closure of chapters is temporary and does not mean the end of obligations. The European Union will continue to monitor the implementation of reforms until the negotiations are concluded.
