Railway projects, a "condition" for decarbonization - World Bank: Economic and environmental benefits are great

From Ola Mitre

Railway projects, a "condition" for decarbonization - World Bank:

Rail, whether diesel or electric, is much more energy efficient and emits less CO₂ per passenger-km or tonne-km than almost all other forms of transport, whether road or air.” A recent World Bank report on the role of rail in decarbonising transport in developing countries highlights that the main climate role of trains comes precisely from shifting transport from road and air to rail, bringing about 80% potential emissions savings.

The report also provides typical examples of savings. According to the document, moving a passenger from a two-seater car to a diesel train saves about 84 g CO₂e per km, while moving 1 ton-km of freight from trucks to a diesel train saves about 55 g CO₂e. These estimates are for diesel trains, while if the possibility of electrification is also taken into account, then the savings in emissions are even greater.

Although the report speaks about countries in general, it is also important for Albania, as the development of rail transport can reduce emissions, bringing closer the objectives of the Green Agenda and Chapter 27, for membership in the European Union. Currently, several projects are under development that aim to revive rail transport for passengers and goods, such as the Tirana – Durrës – Rinas, Vorë – Hani i Hotit or Durrës – Rrogozhinë train.
