Record projection, 21.6 million air passengers/ Balluku: ICAO predicts doubling of air transport by 2040
The International Civil Aviation Organization predicts a doubling of the number of passengers in air transport by 2040. The data was shared on social networks by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, who emphasized that the ICAO projection speaks of 21.6 million air passengers in 2040, up from 10.7 million in 2024.
"Civil aviation is growing year after year, becoming the main gateway to Albania, so it is our main focus," commented Balluku, focusing on the airports that aim to contribute in this direction.
Tirana International Airport remains the main hub of air traffic, followed by the airports of Vlora, Kukës, and Gjirokastër. The government program 2025-2029 stated that within the 4-year period, the certification and operation of Vlora Airport will be carried out, as well as the opening of the South Airport in Gjirokastër, expanding the national air network.
Meanwhile, the latest INSTAT data shows that the number of passengers who traveled by air in the first half of 2025 is around 5 million, with an increase of 7%, compared to the same period a year earlier. This is also due to new, low-cost routes, as well as opportunities for connections to places that were not easily accessible before.
