Turkey removes some tariffs on US imports/ Government decision before Erdogan-Trump meeting
Turkey said it had lifted retaliatory tariffs imposed in 2018 on US imports ranging from passenger cars to fruit, in a sign of warming bilateral relations as President Tayyip Erdogan travels to the United States.
Erdogan will attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week, ahead of a meeting at the White House on Thursday with US President Donald Trump, who said he expected trade and military deals to be signed during the visit.
The cancellation of the tariffs, which, when introduced, had included products such as passenger cars, fruits, rice, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, solid fuels and chemical products, was announced in the Official Gazette of Turkey.
Since returning to the White House earlier this year, Trump has used sweeping tariffs in an effort to reshape global trade in Washington's favor, targeting not only traditional rivals but also early allies.
The United States set the tariff rate on Turkish imports at 15% in August. Ankara has not retaliated against this action.
Erdogan last visited Trump at the White House in 2019, and the pair have had a turbulent past.
While they had a close personal bond during Trump's first term, it was also a period of strained bilateral relations due to disagreements over Washington's ties to Kurdish fighters in Syria and Ankara's relations with Moscow.
Turkey's Trade Ministry said the tariffs imposed in 2018 were subsequently updated based on actions taken by the parties, but they remained in effect to some extent, without giving figures on the current tax rate.
"Additional financial obligations imposed on imports of certain products originating in the US have been terminated," the ministry said, citing progress in negotiations with the United States.
She said Turkey will continue to work towards meeting an existing target of $100 billion in annual bilateral trade with the United States. Trade volumes between the two countries were approximately $30 billion last year.
"We will continue to develop policies to increase trade relations for the benefit of both parties, diversify them taking into account competitive conditions, and develop new areas of cooperation," the ministry added.
