Many Croatian pensioners live in poverty/ Unions unhappy with recent pension

Pensioner unions in Croatia are unhappy after the latest pension indexation, which saw around 1,200,000 pensioners receive a 6.48% increase. They are demanding that the pension for 40 years of work be higher than 880-1,000 euros.

According to an analysis by Croatian Radio Television, those receiving a 300 euro pension have only earned 20 euros more; a 500 euro pension has an additional 32 euros added, while pensioners with 1,000 euros have benefited 65 euros more.

The average increase is around 28 euros, while former MPs and government members have received up to 145 euros more.

"Since July 1, pensions have been indexed according to a new formula in the ratio of 85:15, which is based on the increase in wages and consumer prices in the last six months, and this brought an increase of 6.48%. I think it is clear that pensions are increasing," said sources from the Pension System Administration.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Pensioners' Union state that this increase has not brought about significant changes.

"We are constantly following wage increases. Our pensions account for only 45% of wages, while in Slovenia this ratio is 67%. We cannot equal this, let alone exceed it, to achieve a satisfactory percentage for pensioners. Until pensions are indexed 100 percent either according to wage increases or according to price increases, they will continue to deteriorate," the representatives reacted.

The union proposed that the lowest pension for 40 years of work should not be less than 880 or 1,000 euros, figures that the Pension System Administration considers unrealistic.
