Albanian passports, the most sought after / January–June, 400 people

The number of Albanians who have applied to renounce their citizenship has dropped by almost three times during the first six months of 2025, compared to the same period a year earlier. According to data from the Ministry of Interior, only 103 Albanian citizens have requested to renounce their Albanian passport, compared to 315 cases registered in the first six months of 2024.

The decline in this indicator is closely related to migration trends. In 2024, migration flows were higher, especially due to accelerated applications for citizenship in several European countries. In 2025, this pace has decreased, automatically reflecting a decrease in requests to renounce Albanian citizenship. A significant part of the citizens who surrender their Albanian passport are those who acquire other citizenships, such as Italian, German or French, where in some cases the laws do not allow the holding of dual citizenship.

While fewer Albanians are choosing to renounce their citizenship, an opposite trend is observed in applications to obtain it. According to data from the Ministry of Interior, around 400 individuals have submitted an application to regain an Albanian passport during January–June 2025, marking a slight increase compared to the same period last year. This is mainly related to Albanians born abroad, especially children of immigrants, who seek to obtain their parents' citizenship for identity, practical reasons or to have two passports. There is also no shortage of cases from individuals from neighboring countries who see Albanian citizenship as an opportunity for employment, freer movement or studies.
