Interest rates on deposits in 2025 - BoA: With a downward trend. Those over 2 years for individuals, the only ones with an increase in May

In 2025, interest rates on deposits in lek have been continuously decreasing for citizens. The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows that in May of this year, interest rates averaged 1.57% for new deposits from individuals, down from 2.09% recorded a year earlier.
Despite the fact that interest rates have not been very favorable and the profit from deposits is smaller than before, Albanians' savings in banks have been increasing again.
Locking up large amounts of money for a longer period of time has caused rates on deposits over 2 years to rise to 2.56% in May from 2.26% in April. Interest rates on deposits from one to two years fell to 2.03%, while those up to 1 year remained almost unchanged.
Interest rates on citizen deposits have been lower than those on businesses, because the latter deposit higher amounts in the bank than citizens. According to official statistics, interest rates on business deposits have not followed a downward trend like individual deposits, but have had occasional ups and downs.
However, in May, interest rates on business deposits also fell. Rates averaged 2.34% for new business deposits from 2.79% recorded in May 2024. However, unlike individuals, rates for long-term savings over 2 years dropped to 3.12%, those from one to two years remained unchanged, while interest rates on deposits up to one year also fell to 2.34%.
On the other hand, interest rates on euro deposits remain lower than those in lek, but with an increase compared to other months. Interest rates reached an average of 1.16% for individual savings and 1.38% for businesses.
