Israel sets date for Gaza evacuation - Aims to take control of city by October 7

Israel's security cabinet approved the expansion of the war in Gaza, which will take place in more than one phase, according to an Israeli source.

The deadline for the first phase of the operation, which includes the evacuation of Gaza City and the expansion of humanitarian aid distribution, is October 7, the source said. That date marks the second anniversary of the Hamas-led attack that “sparked” Israel’s war in Gaza. October 7 was deliberately chosen for its symbolism, the same source added.

Israel will significantly expand humanitarian efforts at the start of the first phase, according to another Israeli official, but the plan does not foresee aid distribution inside Gaza City as a way to encourage Palestinians to evacuate.

The overall plan is expected to last up to five months and does not include full control of the entire enclave, focusing only on Gaza City and excluding the surrounding camps. But it does require the forced evacuation of nearly half the territory's population. The Israeli military already controls 75% of Gaza.

The Israeli army chief of staff warned the security cabinet of the risk of worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the international implications of such an escalation of the war, but his warnings were ignored. He also highlighted the danger posed to the 50 remaining hostages, 20 of whom are believed to still be alive.

Instead, the Chief of Staff proposed a more limited plan, focused on encircling Gaza City and other areas, but according to the source, the security cabinet rejected this idea.

According to the Israeli government, "this alternative plan would achieve neither the possibility of defeating Hamas nor the return of the hostages."
