Water utility debt repayment begins - Balluku: Good news for the economy, shows

The debts accumulated by citizens for water supply have begun to be paid off. The news was given by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, who inspected the construction works for the new water supply in the Mamurras area.

"Projects are always complete, since we also have smart meters and we will no longer have problems with water metering. The most important are the maximum parameters with which we are building these waterworks. I have been informed by the Ministry of Finance that the debts accumulated by citizens for water supply have begun to be repaid. Until today, every water supply company created outstanding liabilities, while now a change is noticeable, where these debts are being repaid, including liabilities towards OSHEE. This is good news for the Albanian economy, as it shows the consolidation of the water supply and sewage sector, not forgetting the special importance of the coast."

For his part, the General Director of the National Water Supply and Sewerage Agency, Klevis Jahaj, stated that with the measures taken, water losses have decreased by 7%, significantly improving the monitoring and management of the network.

“During 2024, no new debts were created. The enterprises that have performed better are Lezha, Korça and Durrës, although the latter has had previous problems with debts. Now, the situation has stabilized and their performance has improved. In the Kavaja water supply, there was a 6-month period where neither salaries nor insurance were paid, but the situation has now normalized. Our focus is now on Saranda, where intensive work is being done to improve the sewage system.”

The focus of investments this year is on investments in coastal areas, as there are expected to be over 20% more visitors than last year.
