Diaspora vote: Proposed extension of the validity of identification documents until the end of May!
The Committee on Legal Affairs, Public Administration and Human Rights reviewed today the Normative Act "On providing Albanian citizens with passports for traveling abroad", as amended, and the Act "On the electronic identity card of Albanian citizens", as amended.
Deputy Minister of Interior, Andi Mahila, stated that, "in these two acts, it is proposed to extend the validity period, respectively, for the electronic identity card and the passport for travel abroad until the end of May 2025, for Albanian citizens residing abroad."
He emphasized that, "the approval of this proposal will enable the broad participation of voters from outside the territory of the Republic of Albania who will register on the PER platform in the parliamentary elections."
Mahila underlined that the Central Election Commission has requested in writing to the Council of Ministers and, for the information of political parties, to extend the validity period of identification documents.
"The proposal of both acts is affected as a result of the current situation, in which it is required to enable the right to vote for Albanian citizens residing outside the territory of the Republic of Albania, who do not have valid identification documents for the parliamentary elections to be held on May 11, 2025. This concern was also highlighted in the report of the OSCE assessment mission dated December 3-6, 2024 for the parliamentary elections of May 11, 2025," said Mahila.
